NEWS AND VIEWS

Cybersecurity Tips & Tricks

Cybercrime is a fast-growing threat in America. The FBI recently reported that cyberattacks and fraud cost the country $10.2 billion in 2022. These threats don't just target businesses and institutions; everyone who uses the Internet can fall victim to cybercrime.  Over the next few months, Wilson Communications will share with our customers a few tips on how to protect yourself online.

Scareware
Recently, Wilson Communications' IT Department has noticed an uptick in Scareware. Scareware is not just browsing the Internet, clicking on a link, and being redirected to a random web page. These web pages are designed to instill fear, leading you to contact bad actors or download random files containing malware. Scare sites contain messages, images, or sounds that can cause panic. An example is the Windows Defender scare site below:

Scareware is web browser-based and can be resolved by the following steps:

  • Do not contact the phone number or any other contact information on the screen.
  • The browser is full-screen and can be exited by pressing the F11 or Escape keys on your keyboard.
  • Close the web browser or browser tab containing the scare site.
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies.
  • Run a deep scan with your antivirus software.
  • Restart your computer.

If you have future issues with scareware popping up, contact Wilson Communications at (800) 432-7607 to schedule an appointment.
